Fresh Trouble: $207M Josh Trade Talk For Anthony Rizzo Replacement Hits The Bricks

Yankees Considering Trade for Josh Naylor to Replace Anthony Rizzo at First Base

The New York Yankees are reportedly exploring a move to acquire Cleveland Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor, according to longtime MLB insider Jon Heyman. Following their decision to decline Anthony Rizzo’s $17 million team option for 2025, the Yankees are actively searching for a cost-effective upgrade at the position.

Naylor, 27, comes with a $14.2 million salary for next season and would provide a significant boost in offensive production compared to Rizzo’s struggles in 2024. While Naylor’s contract expires after 2025, Heyman notes that the Yankees would likely need to negotiate a long-term extension, potentially valued at five years and $100 million, to justify parting with prospects for the left-handed slugger.

Naylor’s Production Outpaces Rizzo

Statistically, Naylor is a clear upgrade at the plate. In 2024, he posted a .294 batting average, a .352 on-base percentage, and a .498 slugging percentage, along with 28 home runs and 94 RBIs. These numbers contrast sharply with Rizzo’s .219 average, .304 OBP, and .374 SLG, as well as just 13 home runs and 45 RBIs during a season marred by inconsistency.

Defensively, while Rizzo boasts a strong pedigree as a multi-time Gold Glove winner, Naylor has proven to be a reliable option at first base, though not at the same elite level. His left-handed power bat would be particularly suited to Yankee Stadium’s short right-field dimensions.

What Would It Take to Land Naylor?

With only one year remaining on his current deal, Naylor’s potential status as a one-year rental could bring down the acquisition cost. One rumored trade package involves Yankees fifth-ranked prospect Will Warren. The 25-year-old right-hander debuted in 2024 but struggled in limited action, posting a 10.32 ERA across 22 innings.

If Cleveland agrees to such a deal, it could give the Guardians a young pitcher with developmental upside, while the Yankees secure a proven middle-of-the-order bat.

Balancing Risks and Rewards

The Yankees must weigh the risks of trading for Naylor without securing an extension against the immediate benefits he brings to their lineup. After falling short in the 2024 World Series, New York is under pressure to improve its offensive production and avoid another disappointing campaign.

Naylor’s affordability, combined with his impressive 2024 performance, makes him an appealing option for a team looking to balance competitive aspirations with payroll considerations. If the Yankees can strike a deal, they may finally solve their first-base dilemma while gaining a player poised to thrive in pinstripes.
